Mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the 12S rRNA gene — one of the first identified signaling peptides originating from mitochondrial DNA. MOTS-C can translocate to the nucleus and regulate gene expression in response to metabolic stress, activating AMPK and influencing the folate-methionine cycle.
